(travel diary) Arrival: Munich

Category: Bavaria, 2006
Landed in Munich at 17:30. Two hours later than planned because of "technical problems" (a broken relay somewhere on the plane). Then we took the train to Munich Hauptbahnof (central station, price about 8 Euro). There we checked prices at some of the hostels close to the train station..

Since we were only going to sleep for 4 to 5 hours (before travelling down further south) our decision landed on the cheapest one: Jaegers Hostel (price: 13 Euro / night / person). There were ten beds in our room and it was half full with sleeping beings. We tried our best going to bed wíthout waking someone. I got a top bed in the left side of the room. Tobias got a bottom bed in the right side of the room.

I didn't sleep much that night: a bed (or something..) squeeked constantly. A korean snored loudly.

Tobias had to change bed in the middle of the night. Two germans woke him up and told him that "You've taken our bed!". For me, this was a funny moment. I laughed at the situation from my "eagle nest" bed.

(travel diary) To Salzburg in Austria

Category: Bavaria, 2006
Started the morning with a nice breakfast at the Fischers. Then, we thanked them and "checked" out. We continued the morning with a couple of hours at the internet café Play Maxx. Price: 3 Euro per hour. It felt good to catch up with the travel diaries. If you like to play pool, they have some tables here.

Then we walked to the train station. From here we took a train to Salzburg via a train change in Munich. Arrived at about 18 in Salzburg. The journey went well (no broken relays ;)).

The tourist info at the train station gave us some info about two nearby hostels. Our choice landed on the one closest to the station: Yoho hostel. After earlier bad experiences with multi bed rooms, we now chosed a double room... a good night of sleep is worth 3 Euro more! 21 Euro did the room cost (excluding breakfast which be bought at the hostel for 1.5 Euro to 2.5 Euro).

Finnished the day with a walk in the neighbourhood.

(travel diary) Back to Munich, jazz club

Category: Bavaria, 2006
At first we thought about taking a bus and visit the castle that was featured in the movie "Where Eagles Dare "(1968). But we skipped that since the bus timetable was bad. Furthermore it is closed for visits in the winter so to go there only for a couple of photos seemed too much. More time in Munich was the better choice.

Wombat's hostel became our temporary home this time. It's close to the central station and only a couple of meters from our last hostel here in Munich (Jaeger's). The price is 16 Euro per night per person in a six bed room.

We walked around the town to watch the festives that was going on. A party called Fasching is currently going on around in Munich and in the whole country but by different names. It's a carneval where people gets crazy and dress up like clowns, witches, mobile phones, bears.. anything! Lots of beer, candy, food, scene performances and more. All the food stands play their own music loud! The smallest hot-dog stands tend to play german techno at maximal volume!

Later this evening we went to the jazzclub UnterfahrtNew window (entrance: 13 Euro). A quartet was playing this night (one contrabass, two guitars and a saxophone). Their name was Wawau Adler Quartet. Pretty good. I've uploaded a picture and a movie clip from their performance.

(travel diary) More Munich, potatoes, olympics

Category: Bavaria, 2006
Started the day with an "all-you-can-eat" breakfast at our hostel ( 4 Euro).

Then we bought a three-day card valid on buses, trains and trams ( 18 Euro). Valid for up to five persons!

Thereafter we visited a museum: Kartoffel Museum (the Potato Museum). Here we found lots of potato art (by Dali among others). The place also featured an exhibition with potato based products. So now I can say I've been here.. :)

When you're away from home, you have different needs to satisfy. One of these needs is to play on musical instruments! We hadn't yet bought any instruments (always try to do that on trips) so we headed for Munich's instrument stores. Lindberg's was pretty nice. They had two floors with lots of synthesizers all kinds of instruments. It felt good to play some music. Didn't find any instrument to buy, though.

Then we went to the area where the Olympic Games were held in 1972. Up in the Olympiatyrm (Olympia Tower), 180 metres up, we got a good view over the city. We stayed here until the sunset (good photo opportunity). The tower also featured a rock museum with various signed guitars, scene clothes and concert tickets.

(travel diary) Beer hall, white sausages

Category: Bavaria, 2006
Made a short visit to one of the most famous beer halls in Munich: Hofbräuhaus. Lots of people, beer and a live band played bavarian folk music.

Then, we ate lunch at a small pub just across the street. Weisswurst (white sausages) and Weissbier (wheat beer). It didn't look that good but it tasted like ordinary swedish frukostkorv. The beer was ok, it tasted like... beer :). A beer lover would certainly have noticed many things about this special beer. But I'm not like that.

After the food-intake we made a last effort to find something to buy (instruments). Too bad, all shops closed early. This seemed to be the final day of the Fasching. It looks like I've to buy two instruments on my next journey to keep the average up :)

Since the dinner this evening was the last dinner before heading back to Sweden we needed something tasty! Steak or burger or something. We found two suitable restaurants: Maredo (mexican) or Hard Rock Café. Our choice fell on Hard Rock where we had some long awaited burger.

This day ended pretty late at our hostel's own bar. Pretty pleasent place actually. BUT, they had only one pool table, and that was a small pool one. Yuck! But of course, it's better than nothing.

(travel diary) Last day, flying back home

Category: Bavaria, 2006
Our flight departed at lunchtime so not much time to do anything interesting.
We bought some take-away breakfast at a small supermarket, ate it at the airport. Then we flew back home to Sweden. No problems with the relays this time!

Auf wiedersehen!
